The village of Laren The village of Laren is situated in an area known as "het Gooi". Het Gooi comprises several villages, such as Bussum, Laren, Blaricum and so on. Het Gooi itself is located in the province of "Noord Holland", one of the more central provinces of the Netherlands. Laren has an agricultural history mixed with a few artistic interests. In the eighteenth and nineteenth century Laren was known as a sort of meetingpoint for sheepherders with their flock, since at its outer edges Laren is surrounded by vast open fields and moors, ideal for the sheep. It also has a more artistic stroke: the famous Dutch painter Anton Mauve came from Laren and nowadays you can find several references to his name: the Mauve cafe, Mauvezand (a streetname) and so on. In the Netherlands itself it is viewed as a "chique" village: the fact that the nextdoor city is home to the Dutch TV-and radio business makes for more than just a few Dutch celebrities living in Laren. If you're visiting Holland, try visiting Laren on a sunny saturday, you'll get a quick impression of what I mean.
