Dutch pot policy

Back in the 1960's the Dutch government made international heradlines for taking the decision to tolerate the growing and smoking of (limited) quantities of marijuana. Being the first and only country in the world to openly recognise the benefits of a "controlled" system versus a repressive system, the Dutch are well-placed to have a valid opinion on (international soft-) drugs policies.
The data gathered since the 60's shows what almost everybody already knew: tolerating the use of soft-drugs did NOT result in a rising number of users and neither did it result in a higher number of crimes associated with it. On the contrary: the number of users remains almost steady throughout all those years and the number of crimes associated with it have declined.

Besides the fact that making any substance illegal has never made those substances "disappear" (alcohol, cocaine etc.), it seems odd - to say the least - to forbid someone from growing a plant at home that freely grows in nature. Like nature made a mistake :)
Many countries base their drugs-policy on other reasons than public health because it's more lucrative for certain "industries" to combat the presence of substances than it is to carefully inform users of potential consequences.
