Collioure
Collioure is a small village located on the "Cote Vermeille", the red coast, of the French Pyrenees. It is famous for its artisitic appeal: in its history famous artists like Picasso, Matisse, Derain, Dufy Chagall, Marquet and others settled here for a while to work in these exceptional conditions. The village is nested in a bay, overlooking the mediterranean. It has become so famous that each year on the 15th of august the beach and center of the village is crowded with as many as one million tourists, all there to admire the annual fireworks to celebrate one of France's national holidays.
The story goes that many of the famous painters who passed through the village paid for their meals and drinks with their paintings. Les Templiers, one of Collioure's bars, is one of the most famous places to visit: all of the walls of the bar are covered with paintings, some of them by famous artists like picasso.
Besides the artistic appeal collioure has much more to offer: the castle overlooking the bay, the numerous shops, restaurants and bars, art galleries and expositions...and nice lazy strolling on sunny days :) |
